A study produced by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry revealed that 99.7% of respondents believe that a smile is an important social asset. Furthermore, 96% believe that a nice smile makes a person more attractive and 74% believe an unattractive smile can negatively impact career opportunities.
When asked what the participants thought would improve their smile, most answered a whiter, brighter smile. The quest for whiter teeth is nothing new, but it was in the 1980’s that dentists who used hydrogen peroxide to treat gums noticed the whitening effect it had on teeth.
Special trays and gels were finally developed specifically for teeth whitening. This has become the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedure performed, in part because as we age, our teeth tend to get darker. Other factors that may possibly lead to discolored or stained teeth include genetics, some foods and beverages, tobacco products, inadequate oral hygiene and medicines.
Teeth Whitening Techniques
For those individuals who would likely benefit from teeth whitening, there are several methods available. Laser bleaching and custom fit tray bleaching are in-patient procedures, whilst whitening strips can be purchased over the counter and done in the comfort of your own home.
Of course, there are advantages and disadvantages to each option. Laser bleaching shows immediate results and both laser bleaching and custom fit trays will offer a higher degree of whitening power.
Store bought whitening strips are economical, unfortunately, the potency is much less than in-patient procedures.
Laser bleaching offers immediate results and several shades whiter while custom fit tray bleaching is very economical and results can be several shades whiter as time passes.
Deciding which method is best can be a bit overwhelming. It is a good idea to make a dental appointment at our office as you consider teeth-whitening. Getting professional advice about teeth whitening or any other dental procedure is always a good option.
